I learned that eye contact helps hols students' attention, shows what is correct, and encourages. The teacher's voice will fluctuate naturally depending on the situation but it should generally be slow and clear. Gestures reduce TTT, help convey meaning, increase visual interest, and help change the pace of the class. I learned about the advantages and disadvantages of teaching a whole group, individual and in paris. While each has its positive and negative aspects I believe the best is to encompass all three method into the classroom setting. While some lessons might benefit form one or the other, it is in the students best interest to exercise all three as each type focuses on specific needs. For example, while whole class teaching reduces STT pair work increases it. Using student names is important for building rapport, and it should be used at the end of the question instead of at the beginning so other students have an opportunity to digest the question as well. The classroom layout is important because it deals with student to student interaction, individual attention, movement, and the teacher's position in class. I guess what dictates the set up is mainly the classroom layout and the number of students in the class. However, in my experience I have always felt that a u-shape is best for all parties involved just so long as the instructor doesn't have her back to the students. Wiring on the board is essential but its important to limit the amount of dead-time and the time you have your back to the students. Therefore, its important to have a powerpoint presentation prepared, or set up your board work before class or while the students are engaged in an activity. TTT and STT are both equally important thus, its important to balance the two. However, the teacher as the model must also spend a great amount to talking since she or he will be instructing, giving directing, encouraging, answering questions and correcting. To have authority, be respected and discipline well I have to be fair and stay true to my word. If I make a threat I must carry it out. But before I speak or take action, I will use non-verbal cues and humor to ameliorate the situation.
