Teach English in Danshui Jiedao - Huizhou Shi
This unit concentrates on the receptive skills of listening and reading, which are both focused on input rather than output. Motivation for listening or read9ing can be roughly divided into two major categories: for a specific purpose, such as reading an instruction manual or listening to the weather report, and for entertainment or enjoyment, such as reading a novel or listening to an interesting discussion. Important subskills within the receptive skills that learners will need to grasp include detailed reading, scanning for specific information, skimming for and overview of content, prediction, and deduction or inference from context. Some potential problems that may arise when teaching receptive skills concern either the topic of the text, the language contained in it, or the tasks required. For example, students may make the error of reading word-by-word instead of grasping an understanding of the text as a whole, on the sentence level. The length and structure of both individual sentences and the entire text may present difficulties as well. With listening, factors such as overly high speed or flow of information and unfamiliar or heavy accents may interfere and should be minimalized as much as possible. Careful selection of texts, balancing the percentage of authentic and inauthentic articles, and pre-teaching of problematic vocabulary are methods that may be utilized to prevent these problems. Aside from this, the topics of articles used should be varied and of interest to the students. The teacher plays a great role in inspiring motivation and interest as well, and should do their best to promote interest and participation through a positive attitude and the use of suitable engage activities. Finally, tasks should be geared to promote understanding while not discouraging students, being neither too high nor too low level. While brief, this lesson explained the key methods and problems associated with teaching receptive skills clearly and concisely, and was beneficial to my understanding of teaching input skills effectively. The example lesson outlines helped my understanding of how to organize reading/listening focused lessons in a manner that ensures maximum comprehension.
