Teach English in ChenjiAng Jiedao - Huizhou Shi
This unit covered the history of different methods and techniques developed over time that was studied to lead up to the ESA method.In studying it I could see a lot of my own way of teaching and learning of a second language. We are all guilty of Grammar translation and frequently use drills in our classes as behaviorist theory Audio-linguistics would suggest.As a PE teacher I think it is clear that the Total Physical Response theory the one is that I identify with the most, motion and learning. But I learned so much from the lesson planning and activities. Especially the engage stage of a lesson.I am currently teaching PE in a camp setting of teaching English as second language to Taiwanese learners. The main purpose is to just get them talking and thinking in English. It is as if the study part is not required and then of cause activate is the next part where they should use the language freely. But after this new knowledge, I miss that we can not study and use worksheets and make sure the learners understood the language points. I also know that I talk too much, limiting learner talking time and interrupt when they are doing work/tasks . I need to monitor more and make notes of mistakes to help them after a task is completed during feedback. Another thing that I learned is that I should not draw a picture if I needed a specific answer I should show the picture. I like the flexibility of boomerang and Patchwork ESA lessons. My lessons always use to end with study but I am very excited to change with an activate stage. I think my lessons can easily become predictive but with patchwork lesson plan examples it will not be the case any more. Engage activities that I know my learners would like is -Consequences, memory game, word linking, I am going on holiday, adaption on Scattegories and the box game. All of this unit are connected to a degree to everything I have learned in previous courses but the thing that stood out was the correction of writing to use the coding system. I struggled with how neat my corrections were and to NOT do the corrections for the learner but just indicate a mistake and give them time to correct on their own. Now all of this can be rectified with coding system.
