This unit has taught me that there have been and still are many different approaches (techniques and methods) to teaching EFL. Some are more conservative and focus on grammar and drilling pronunciation while others are more complex like \"The Silent Way\" or \"Task-Based Learning\". Each has its benefits. We will be focusing on ESA - this is a methodology with three phases which aims to motivate and engage students in the learning. ESA incorporates some analytical study as well as opportunities to practice speaking the language. Most phases will begin with elicitation (asking the students to speak or carry out a task) while the teacher can assess their level of understanding. This then forms the basis for where the lesson will head towards and allows the teacher to gauge what areas will need more work. Lessons can work in just the three phases or can be \"boomerang\" or \"patchwork\" where some of the phases are used more than once. During the study phase, the students are given the chance to focus in on fine details and the teacher has the chance to give guidance and error correction. The other two phases are primarily for speaking the language and error correction should be kept to a minimum for fluency's sake.
