Unit 9 discusses concepts related to general lesson planning. Proper lesson planning aids both the instructor and students in many ways. It provides an outline for the instructor to work from through the class period and the semester as a whole while allowing for flexibility and variation during individual class periods, and records a history of previous topics covered for later reference. It is essential that the instructor keep the lesson plans simple as they may need to be altered on the fly during class, structured in a uniform manner for easy reference, balanced and varied in terms of skills covered as well as attempting to properly estimate a schedule for each activity so as not to go over or under time. Lesson plans must serve the students and the instructor equally by having clearly outlined learner objectives, activities and materials utilized to achieve these objectives, the individual lesson's place in the overall language point in the entire class, common and anticipated students may have with the material, clear but flexible structure for ESA phases, an understanding of student level and ability and finally, aspects of the teacher's own performance to be critiqued and improved upon for later lessons.
