This unit focuses on English language teaching theories, methods and techniques. The unit begins with an overview of many methodologies for language training, including grammar-translation, audio-lingualism, presentation-practice-production (ppp), task-based learning, the silent way, suggestopaedia, the lexical approach and several other methodologies as well. Introduced in this unit is a new approach to English training. This approach is referred to as engage-study-activate (esa). Engage refers to arousing the student's interest and to getting them involved in the training lesson. Study means getting the student focused on the language being learned and how that language is constructed. Activate is the stage at which the student uses any and all of the new language as possible. During the engage phase, students experience learning activities such as discussions, pictures, drawings, mime, video, texts, and real objects. The study phase activities include elicitation, pronunciation, spelling, word order and analysis. Ideas for the activate phase include role-play, communication games and story building. Esa is considered to be the most effective and logical of the different methodologies for new teachers.
