This unit covered teaching special groups, which included beginners, individuals, children, and English for Specific Purpose and Business English. In teaching beginners, it is important to recognize the different types of beginners. Teachers can be more visual, shouldn?t try to do too much too quickly, and can use choral repetition, among other techniques. For teaching individuals, it is advisable to use activities from course books, to complete a needs analysis, and to make sure that guided conversation is used in addition to free conversation, balancing the student?s wants and needs. When teaching children, it can be important to focus on listening, and to create routines and use lots of repetition. One can also use slower pronunciation, use higher pitch and exaggerated intonation, and refer to the child itself. I will remember to keep stickers and smileys around as rewards. In Business English and English for Special Purpose, it is important to understand the wants and needs of the students, and a needs analysis at the start of the course helps with this. Group dynamics will be very important, and one must design activities such that learners of different levels are included and don?t get bored.
