I was taught in the university that it is better to use the name of the student at the start when calling on them. The reason is that the student will be given at least a few minutes to think or prepare for the question/instruction. I have been using that since I started teaching back in my country. However, it is stated in this unit that it should be otherwise. I guess I will have to try which will be more effective then. In terms of classroom arrangement, I had my kindergarten students sit on the floor as we start the class. However, after half an hour, they become fidgety and restless as expected. Some just suddenly approach and hug me. What I did was after the break time in an hour class is that I let them sit on a chair to show that ?play time? is finished and we are already in ?class? mode. One of my concerns teaching pre-kindergarten students is the crying ones. I have been asking around for the best advice I could get to handle them. Based on my experience, the Japanese teacher handles the crying student and they both join the class. I am actually skeptical with that idea because it distracts the other students and sometimes we couldn?t hear ourselves as the other student is crying.
