Unit 19 addresses the different types of classrooms you may find yourself in. This is important because a beginners classroom is largely different than a classroom of business students or teaching one-on-one. Each type of class will call for an analysis of needs in order to give the students/clients lessons that will be most useful to them. For example, when teaching older, working students, presentation skills are much more necessary than when dealing with first time English students. As well, teaching an individual student will call for a much more personalized lesson plan and some activities, such as group work, may not be appropriate. It is also important to be aware of the different types of learners within a group. For example, teaching an adult beginner will call for a different approach than teaching a class of young beginners. You may even have to start as far back as teaching the Roman alphabet. As some levels and types of learners can be more challenging to teach than others, it is important to be aware of the teaching style you are most comfortable with--teaching beginners may be more rewarding, however it may also be more work than a group of adults whose only inconvenient restriction is time and energy.
