Unit 5 covered the topic of Classroom Management and the skills needed to effectively organise and manage the class in a relaxed fashion whilst maintaining discipline amongst the students. The importance of eye contact, gestures and voice as teacher communication and class management tools was discussed referring to best practice and appropriate scenarios. The unit also discussed class layout/arrangement and student grouping examples, each with its own pros and cons depending on the size of the class and the physical resources available. Grouping situations depend on the stage of the lesson and characteristics of the students. Other classroom management topics covered included: Using Student Names, writing on the board, giving students individual attention, teacher and student talk time, how instructions should be delivered to the class, establishing and building teacher/student rapport and classroom discipline. Teachers need to be flexible and adaptable according to the physical space and resources, the individual student characteristics and language levels. They also need to be tuned in to each student and communicate with them, verbally and non-verbally to encourage participation and enhance their confidence.
