Teach English in Huangtian Zhen - Hezhou Shi
Unit 8 addressed the teaching of productive language skills -- i.e. speaking and writing. The author began by describing the aims of communication. It was argued that instruction in communicative skills depends upon genuine student interst in the material being communicated. If students do not feel \"the need and desire\" to communicate, their progress in communicative skills will be stunted. The author proceeded to distinguish between activities focused on accuracy (correct production of language) and those focused on fluency (creative use of language). It was argued that both accuracy and fluency are critical to student growth, and that an effective lesson plan will generally incorporate both. The author also described methods for shoring up student confidence (incl. group work, guided practice, and planning time), and for incorporating opportunities for linguistic creativity into lesson plans. The author discussed the critical writing skills of penmanship, spelling, and punctuation, and argued that creative writing offers an enhanced scope for student engagement. Finally, the author highlighted the role of games as a means of enhancing productive language skills while also maintaining students' interest and energy.
