Modal verbs are used before another verb to add meaning. Modals add a great deal of subtlety to the meaning of a sentence. They can express the politeness and formality of what is being said, the level of obligation or possibility, the degree of suggestion or a person's level of ability. Both passive voice and direct voice express the same overall idea but each places a different emphasis on the subject. Passive voice is used instead of direct voice when the subject is more important than the agent, or doer of the action, or when when the agent is not known at all. A relative clause is one that gives more information about a noun. Relative clauses can be defining if it is absolutely essential to the meaning of what is being said or non-defining if it could be omitted and the main idea would still be understood. Phrasal verbs are multi-word verbs that use a verb in conjunction with one or more particles, yet operate as one idea. These can be tricky for students to learn because the particles change the meaning of the verbs. An example is the verb \"pull\" in \"to pull over a car\" which has a very different meaning than \"to pull a car\". The verb is the same but the article creates a new action meaning.
