This unite went over the equipment and teaching aids for the english language teacher and learner. Most of these examples I found to be obvious, however, the unit did provide excellent resource links and advice on effective usage. The equipment and teaching aids discussed in the unit are as follows: the board, interactive whiteboards, overhead projectors, visual aids, worksheets and work cards, the cassette recorder (which is likely to be out-dated now but can still be resourceful given the classroom has a cassette player), CD player, videos and DVDs, video camera/smart phone, dictionaries, course books, resource books, photocopiers, computers/tablets, and online sources. Examples of each are given within this unit as well as advantages and disadvantages or tips and warnings for some. I believe the best way to promote engaging, effective teaching and learning is through variety and by always observing and getting to know your students. I know that during my student teaching placements I make sure I use a variety of multi-media technologies to assist me in my teaching, in my students' understanding, and in capturing their attention. it is important to also try to match your lessons to the generation of your students (i.e. younger students may be more engaged and comfortable with technology than older/mature students). YouTube was listed as a resource in this unit to utilize, and from experience, I can say that it provides and excellent tool to use. it is often a good way to engage students in your lesson by finding a relevant video or something that would promote discussion beforehand. YouTube is also a great resource to find chymes and songs to help students learn. Being music-oriented, I believe that music can be a powerful aid in helping students grasp some concepts, as music is shown to aid in memory and retention (i.e. something as simple as an alphabet song!). Given all of the equipment and resources discussed in this unit, one message stood out clear to me: a teacher should always test out any equipment prior to their lesson and always have a backup plan in case something goes wrong. Teachers should also try to use a variety of resources and always offer students the access to them or extra help and practice as well.
