This unit discussed authentic and non-authentic materials, lesson planning, resources, and classroom management. Authentic materials are materials that have been produced for real purposes and not for the classroom. Its advantages are that they will give students realistic examples and they are less predictable than materials created for teaching purposes. Non-authentic materials are materials that have been produced for the specific purpose of being a teaching aid. When creating non-authentic materials, it?s important to keep in mind the following: what language is being used, how they?re going to be used in the classroom, and how you?re going to show how to use them. A lesson plan is a working document that tells teachers what should happen throughout the lesson and can also be used to show what students have covered. Resources can be both course books and via the internet. Advantages of using course books are that it provides a syllabus at a level suitable for the students, offers continuity and progression, and continually practices language items previously introduced. The disadvantages are that it doesn?t always fit the specific needs or interests of the class, it can become predictable and boring for the students, and it can lead to teachers becoming lazy and uncreative. The best way to use the course book is to look at it critically and see which sections can be used best in the lesson in addition to non-textbook material. Additionally, the internet provides two major resources: a place teachers can find material and useful information, and various sites students can be directed to. There are many factors that influence order in the classroom: the teacher?s voice, gesture, eye contact, grouping students, using student names, classroom arrangement, teacher position, giving attention, monitoring and feedback, and clear instructions. I learned that everything from materials to activities should be tailored for each specific class based on the group's needs. A lesson plan is a good starting point and a good outline of how the lesson should proceed while also providing information later on about what was covered in the lesson. Resources should be looked at critically and used appropriately.
