The unit talks about Equipment and Teaching Aids.It gives various principles for board-work like; starting with a clean board, legible and neat writing, sectioning off board to give areas for vocabulary,grammar and notes, using different colours, underlining or circling to highlight language points to focus on and many others. The unit examines various kinds of boards; how to use them, their pros and cons.In using interactive whiteboards ( IWBs ) the unit throws light on; testing and having a back up plan since we can never be 100% certain with anything electronic,selecting the system and placing the board in the right position for ease and effeciency.It also points out to the importance of teachers keeping an IWB lesson plan simple. The unit looks into Overhead Projectors which even though its use is diminishing, it is useful for showing pre-prepared overhead transparencies or could be an alternative to the board.With its numerous advantages like focusing students attention, using it for timed reading, gap fill exercises and so no there could also be some disadvantages too like the classroom needs a surface that is not bleached out by direct sunlight The unit also talks about visual aids with most common being real objects, pictures and photos.In the unit we see situations in which worksheets and work cards can help in lessons and these could either be bought from the producer or made by the teacher.There is mention of cassette recorders, CD players, videos and DVDs, video camera, dictionaries, course books, resource books,photocopiers,online resources and computers outlining the main uses of a computer in English language teaching; it could be for word processor,reference tools,email, video clips and so on. After going through this unit I have learnt lots about equipment and teaching aids, most importantly the basic board-work principles, situations in which I can use worksheets and work cards.I also now know a score of online resources that I can easily tap in to help with planning my lessons.
