This unit shows the different kinds of tests to assess the students' levels, progress, and proficiency in their English language. The most common tests that teachers are involved in are: placement, diagnostic, progress, and practice. Placement tests are meant to place students in a specific level of class where they are able to participate; the diagnostic tests are given to see what the students know about a unit so that the teacher can prepare the lessons according to the points that require more attention for the students; progress tests, on the other hand, are given to measure the knowledge retained and what students need more practice with; and the practice tests are designed to prepare students for external or end of year/term exams, which should have the same format as the test that will be taken by the student. The other type of assessment is the external proficiency tests. These tests have three categories. First, the Cambridge general English assessment, which is divided into five levels: Key English Test for the entry level, Preliminary English Test for intermediate, First Certificate in English for high intermediate, Certificate in Advanced English for advanced students, and Certificate of Proficiency in English for more advanced students, is designed for work and study purposes. The second category is Business. Some examples of these tests are the Business Language Testing Service (BULATS), the Cambridge Business English Certificate, and the Test of English for International Communication. These tests are designed for companies who want to assess their ESL employees' communication abilities in the workplace. Lastly are the Academic tests for ESL students who want to pursue a professional career and be admitted into a University. The TOEFL and the IELTS are two of very recognized tests for many Universities around the world. In conclusion, Evaluation and testing are a very important part in the ESOL classroom because teachers need to make sure their students will have the appropriate information and the environment for each student to learn English as a second language. Without evaluation, students would not be able to recognize their achievements to keep themselves motivated during their process of learning a second language.
