Unit 15 discusses the topic of Evaluation and testing. There are different types of evaluations, including tutorials and student evaluations through use of questionnaires that the students can fill out to tell about their view of the value of the course. These can be oral or written. There are also different types of tests that are given for different purposes. A placement test is a test given to a student in order for the teachers to determine at which level of English knowledge the student has already attained. The purpose of this is to be able to place him with a group of students that are at the same basic level, in order to facilitate learning in a group context. The test also wants to make sure the student is able to communicate so that he or she can participate in the learning process at the level that is required. A progress test is given to students during the course of the class to evaluate what the student has or has not retained. This tells the teacher what areas need to be strengthened and practiced more. The test should incorporate testing in each skill: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Retention of grammar and vocabulary, of course, should be tested as well. These tests can also be informal, such as teacher observation of the students during the course of the class. Diagnostic tests are similar to placement tests, but usually more extensive, which are given at the start of a course. They are meant to show what the students already know and to determine his or her areas of difficulty that need to be worked on. Practice tests are meant to prepare a student to take an external exam, such as a TOEFL exam required by most universities. The practice tests should be similar in format and structure to the external exam they are wanting to take. There are many external exams besides the TOEFL exam. Others are the IELTS, the TOEIC, and several Cambridge assessment exams which address different levels of English knowledge. Business English exams test the knowledge of English in business environments. There are also skills for life exams tailored to the needs of those who want to live and work and study in an English speaking country. So you see, there are many and varied types of tests that can be given to the student.
