There was given some useful and general information about English parts of speech in this unit: nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions. Most parts of speech can be divided into types. Nouns can be countable and uncountable, common and proper, abstract, collective and compound, singular and plural. That has been given some important information about adjectives as well. They describe nouns. They are often used in clusters and go in a particular order: size -> age -> color -> material -> noun. Adjectives have comparative and superlative forms. It is explained how these forms are made, including spelling rules when adding suffixes. There is some useful explanation of definite and indefinite articles use. I completely agree that the rules for articles have certain intricacies that should be put across to students in a way that should help them to better understand this topic. From this unit I have understood that verb is a doing word. Verbs can be transitive when followed by an object and intransitive when it cannot be followed directly by an object. Four principal forms of English verbs have been explained and put in a chart. There is some useful information about what an auxiliary verb is - it helps from a tense or an expression by combining with present and past participles or infinitives of other verbs. It's good to know that there are only 3 auxiliary verbs: do, have and be. Adverb is another part of speech. It adds meaning to the action, quality or state denoted by a verb. It's mentioned that there are some fun ways of getting students used to using adverbs correctly, but unfortunately there has been given no example of such a game. It is explained what a gerund is - a certain form of a verb used as a noun. Pronouns are words used instead of nouns a noun phrases. The main types of pronouns are also given. It is mentioned that prepositions can be one of the most difficult grammatical points for students and teachers to explain because there is no uniformity when it comes to preposition placement. All the information that was given in the unit is given briefly and in a way that makes it easy to prepare a lesson, find good examples and find the right words to better explain the material to the students.
