Teachers are faced with problem situations in the classroom. In each bew teaching position a teacher will be faced with meeting a number of new classes for the first time. These classes are vital for the teacher to establish rapport with the students and set the tone for the rest of the course. There are two categories of classses: new group and existing group. New group consist of students not knowing each other while in an existing group the students are likely to know and be comfortable with each other. When teaching the first lesson, it is best not resort to the course book but use activities that would establish rapport between the students, find out about the students, the students needs/aspirations with English and finally find out the English level of each student. Activities that can aid this are questionnaires/surveys, a board game, pass the ball game and needs analysis. In order to warm the class up, short, fun, communicative activities can be done in order to get students motivated and using English. These warmers include hangman, pictionary, tongue twisters etc. There are different lanaguage levels of students in a school and in order for a teacher to handle this issue different materials can be used, use the same materials but different task or pair strong students with weaker ones. Large classes can present the teacher with a number of problems. In order to involve all pupils equallt to classroom control, teachers can use techniques such as appointing group leaders, use worksheets, choral repetition , using worksheets rather than going through activities with the whole class. The use of the native language can be problematic in monolingual classes. Therefore to prevent this, teachers are to ensure that activities used are at an appropriate level, the explanations are clear to all students. Teachers should encourage to use of English in the class where appropriate. If students are trying to speak, only respond to English. In a classroom you can find reluctant students, who dont seem to want to talk or participate in class. For some it may be cultural, for others intimidation or confidence issues. In order to prevent this, use plenty pair work, use role play, a tape recorder or even ensure the sudents can deliver the language in a controlled way.
