Unit 5 Overview There are a few important subjects we learn in this unit: music and chants, games and activities, stories and crafts. All together are needed in the classroom. Music is an amazing tool for teaching English, especially to children. Good songs and chants will stay in a learner?s head long after the lesson is over. Young learners pick up vocabulary, grammatical structures, and the rhythm of the language easily. Here are some of the reasons I believe songs and chants are good in the classroom: ? Children will increase their vocabulary ? There will be an improvement in English speech rhythms, intonation and pronunciation. ? Music and rhythm work can be combined with grammar and language points and have fun. But we have to take into consideration the age of the students and relevance of the song or chant. Young children will love anything with music or a beat but older kids may be embarrassed. Games also add so much fun and difference in the classroom. Students need a lot of practice to internalize important vocabulary and structures. However, for the practice to be meaningful, students must be engaged. Through lively games of charades, pictionary, monopoly, hangman, etc students willingly use the vocabulary and structures, repeatedly gaining much-needed practice. Kids really enjoy playing games but sometimes can have trouble settling down and returning to class. We better have some practical strategies to cool them down. Next we learn about using stories in the classroom. Storytelling remains a powerful element of communication and teaching. It can be easily adapted to the current theme and vocabulary. It offers us the opportunity to connect to special characters, or see the world differently. Stories touch our emotions and make us laugh, cry, fear, and get angry. The book can be created in a way to include all four skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) and we have to choose the one with the proper level for the particular class. Finally, along with stories crafts are playing an important role in the lesson. Students learn to appreciate and value time and culture. It provides children with regular opportunities to think imaginatively and creatively, develop both sides of the brain and have fun during the lesson.
