This unit contrasted two very different video lessons to each other. Each video lesson covered the same content, but the instructor taught each class differently. The second lesson was far more effective than the first, for a number of different reasons. In the first lesson, the teacher jumped right into the lesson content with no warm-up or introduction. He used grammatical terms to try and elicit examples from the students, who were unable to contribute due to not recognizing the terms being used. The teacher also continuously commented on how easy the topic is, and how anyone can understand it. This caused the students to feel less confident and therefore less willing to participate. In addition, the teacher was dismissive of questions that the students had, and appeared disorganized and somewhat unprepared at various points. The teacher also sat down while the students were working, and didn?t walk around to monitor their progress or offer assistance. He also didn?t explain the vocabulary on the worksheet, in particular the many different animals that were introduced. Finally, the teacher offered no praise or words of encouragement to the students. In the second lesson, the teacher started out by having the students display their names so he could refer to them properly. He also spoke much more slowly and clearly than in the first lesson. He started out with a warm-up exercise, and made an effort to include many different students. He also used gestures to elicit vocabulary or to help explain different sections of the lesson. Pair work was also utilized, and praise and encouragement was given to students who contributed answers. This unit was a good example of how important the teacher?s attitude is to the success of the lesson. In the first lesson, the teacher never smiled, and had a very dismissive and poor attitude. In the second lesson, he smiled, was positive, and actively encouraged the students. Proper lesson planning is also crucial. The second lesson followed a very organized yet flexible structure, which allowed for each phase of the class to transition into the next, and build on each other in a way that reinforced what was being taught. A positive attitude and well-organized lesson plan are two key factors to ensure that a lesson will be successful.
