As far as qualities of a good teacher : having patience, motivating students, involving all students equally , offering criticism well and giving individual attention. I don't consider any of the qualities to be most important. I think all of the qualities are essential and a good teachers will have a good balance of all the qualities. Knowing when and where to apply the qualities is as important as the qualities themselves. The roles of a teacher (manager, organizer, assessor, propter, tutor, and model) are like the ingredients for a cake. A good teacher knows exactly how must and when to use each ingredient. The most important quality of a good learner is the good learner is interested in what is being taught. If someone is enthusiastic and excited to practice English it's very easy to learn. If the learner is only there because their parents or someone made them it can be more difficult. But a good teacher can change a students mind [about this]. While Adult learners may be nervous and be more inflexible in accepting different teaching styles the can bring more life experiences to enhance classroom activities and may be more motivated to practice and study the language. Adults may find a new language's structures and conventions difficult to adopt. While young learners minds may be more flexible to amenable to a new language, some may lack motivation or have short attention spans. While students have many reasons to learn I believe most students are there [in class] for the following reasons: Students who are fluent in English will be more marketable to employers who want to conduct business internationally. As a result, many schools universities and employers require English proficiency in their curriculum and entrance examinations. It is very helpful to know English because it can be the 'glue' that allows numerous languages and cultures to communicate. Since it is the most common language it is useful to know it when traveling abroad. In Korea for example many use English phrases adopted from pop-culture in daily conversations. A fun way to learn the language is to watch one's favorite [English] TV shows or movies to practice listening comprehension. Finally, many foreigners want to learn English because they want to go to college or live in the United States, England or Australia.
