I learned the physical properties of sound through definition of phonology ( the study, analysis, and classification of physical properties of sound.) I was taught that the phonology is increasingly used to indicate the whole sound system of a particular language. I learned about stress, rhythm, and intonation as well as the International Phonetic Alphabet. While intonation is the variation in volume and pitch in a whole sentence stress is more concerned with individual words. The normal pattern of intonation in a statement is Rise/Fall. We use Rise/fall intonation in normal pattern of statement, and in straightforward questions. The same rule applies to short utterances like Ok. In intonation changes in greeting, positive, negative, question or instructions. The second intonation pattern is the Fall/rise pattern, which indicates surprise or disagreement. A Fall/rise pattern also indicates that the speaker hasn?t yet finished what he or she has to say. The third kind of intonation is the level of flat kind of intonation, which often indicates that the speaker doesn?t really have that much to say, and perhaps do want to communicate. About stress, one word has only one stress unless it is a longer word; we can only stress syllables, not individual vowels or consonants. I learned about alveolar- fricative sounds in English, I learned what sounds are plosive, the vowel sounds. I could explore the differences between voice and unvoiced phonemes. I learned that in real world pronunciation of words we could link, drop, change or add sounds. Finally, I learned what syllable of the verb or adjective gets stressed when pronounced depending on the number or syllables. Ante- penultimate stress in word is the third from end. Affricate is combination of a plosive sound with derivative. Techniques for indicating and teaching intonation: ?pure noises? can be used to practice conveying attitude. Uttering nonsense sentence several times telling students what attitude you want them to communicate on different occasions. Then repeat the exercise with real sentences. Using gesture, humming or singing, making marks on the board using straight or angled arrows to emphasize the point being made. I learned that if students know about the international IPA, then can pronounce words correctly on their own.
