This unit discusses different groups of learners. The first discussed is beginners. There are several different categories of beginners and it's important to keep in mind where your students are at in order to be aware of their needs. Students may also fall into two or three of these categories. This section then goes on to discuss different methodologies of teaching beginners, what to do about certain potential problems that beginner students may face, and how to encourage motivation of these students. The next group is individual students. Individual students have advantages in that their lessons can be tailored to their specific needs and interests. However, certain activities are impossible in these settings and the teacher often acts as the individual's partner. The third group discussed is children. Their \"innate curiosity\" often acts as a motivator, but they can also become bored easily and have short attention spans so it is important to keep this in mind while planning lessons and while teaching. The next section in the unit is Business English and English for a Specific Purpose (ESP). Clients in these groups may be taught one-to-one, in-company groups, or in-school groups. These groups often vary in English level, so being aware of where each client is at in terms of language ability is important because you don't want to neglect those that have weaker abilities or bore those that are stronger. Something else that is beneficial to these groups is giving a needs analysis so that you can know what they use English for and what they will need it for in the future. This section goes on to discuss planning of the course and possible things to expect or include. The final section discusses monolingual and multilingual classes. Multilingual classes are often taking place in countries where English is the native language, so the students come from different backgrounds with different languages. The advantage here is that their common language will be English. Monolingual is practically the opposite of this, where they all speak the same language (not English) and usually takes place in their home country. This has its own advantages, but the disadvantage is that they are more likely to speak their L1 to each other. It's important to discourage the use of their L1 and encourage the use of English as much as possible.
