Unit 14: Course Books and Lesson Materials Books and materials: In an ideal world, the school would have all the books and materials that you could need. But often the teacher has to create his own materials to supplement the course book or replace sections that are not suitable for the class. For many students materials created by the teacher are more interesting. These materials can be divided into 2 groups: ? Authentic materials ? Created materials Authentic materials: Just above anything a native speaker would hear or read can be described as authentic ? programs, magazines, newspapers, songs, poems, brochures, menus, films on video ? the list is endless. Created materials: These are usually designed by the teacher to replace or supplement materials from a course book. Common created materials include: ? Crosswords ? Word search puzzle ? Role-play cards ? Flashcards ? Gap fill activities ? Picture stories Course books: Course books usually consist of a set of materials: ? Student?s book ? Workbook ? Cassettes ? Teacher?s book ? In some cases video ? Other published materials Course book advantages: It is expected by the students, saves teacher?s time to prepare for the lesson, it provides the syllabus, which is graded to the students? level, the materials have been tested, it is attractive to the eye, and teacher?s book offers many good ideas. Course book disadvantages: It doesn?t always fit the specific needs of all the class members, exclusive use of a course book can become boring to the students, it can make teachers lazy and stop them from being creative, books can be outdated and unattractive. Best use of course books: ? Don?t use the course book for the whole lesson ? Think about which items will motivate your students and which need to be replaced ?
