Unit 14 covered course books and lesson materials. It started with explaining the difference between authentic and created materials, then on to course books in the classroom. These books have their advantages and disadvantages, but it is up to the teacher to discern how much flexibility they have/can have in regards to their reliance on them. I learned that the course book does not have to be followed to the letter, but the best way to use it is to be flexible and customize the relationship with the course book(s) according to the needs of one's students. This gave me a new appreciation for my French teachers in school working with course books they agreed or sometimes disagreed with.
