The unit focused on the types of materials available to a teacher and their proper uses. Specifically, how authentic and non-authentic materials differ. Also highlighted were the ways in which materials could aid a teacher in creating an engaging environment; such as the use of handmade matching or crossword games. Also touched on was how to design an applicable lesson plan, use pre-made language books, and classroom management. I felt this unit has better prepared me to create, use and understand the pros/cons of materials. For example, when using course books, it may be necessary to adapt or omit certain exercises if they focus too much on language points which have yet to be covered.
