Unit 16 covers the conditional tenses (zero, first, second, third, and mixed) and the rules for using reported speech. Conditionals are used when discussing an action that relies, or would have relied, on a certain condition to take place (if/when). Reported speech is used to indirectly retell something originally said using direct speech, ex. \"The man asked, 'Where is everyone?'\" becomes \"The man asked where everyone was.\" Conditional tenses and reported speech both require a full understanding of many other English tenses, so it is easy to see how these two aspects of English grammar could quickly become confusing to students if taught incorrectly or too early on in an ESL course.
