In learning the principles of reported speech I can see where there is a lot of room for mistakes due to all the changes that have to be made. As a native speaker it is something that is subconsciously done, but as a learner of English, there is a whole lot more involved. First one has to correctly identify the tense of the direct speech and then change it to it's corresponding reported speech tense. In order to be successful in this students have to have a strong understanding and foundation in the tense system. In teaching the concepts of this unit to my students I feel that the conditional and direct speech concepts will require a lot less time and attention than the reported speech.
