This unit focused on productive skills needed to effectively communicate in a new language: speaking and writing. In order to increase these skills, both accuracy and fluency are required. Different activities can target either accuracy or frequency. For example, controlled and guided activities are more focused on increasing accuracy, while creative-communication activities focus on fluency. The unit then stressed the importance of encouraging students to speak and techniques that can be employed to encourage this. Writing is also important in learning a new language. A teacher can increase his/her students' writing abilities by practicing handwriting, spelling, and layout/punctuation.
