The past tenses primary function is to place an action or situation in the past. We have the past tense in languages to provide the grammatical means of indicating that an event took place in the past. Continuous past tenses feature a form of the verb 'to be' and the 'ing' verb. For example, It was getting cloudy would be past continuous. Perfect verb forms have the verb ' to have' plus the past participle of the verb. For example, He told me he had climbed the Appalachian Trail would be a past perfect sentence. Lastly, the perfect continuous forms include a form of the verb 'to have' and 'been,' plus the -ing verb. For example, Before going to work, I had been sleeping for five hours.
