Differentiating between present simple, present continuous, present perfect, and present perfect continuous can be challenging, but by teaching students the usages of each, it can help them understand why they would choose to use what form when. Unfortunately, irregular verbs just have to be memorized, but otherwise students can apply logic to their tenses. During the activate stage, using strategies such as interviewing one another, describing situations (changing and stagnant), and comparing students' experiences can be valuable. It is also key that the teacher go off a strong understanding of the differences in tenses, and not only apply his or her understanding of what sounds correct.
