This unit discussed the details of teaching receptive skills-- reading and listening. Listening can be difficult since it is spur of the moment, but reading can prove challenging with different written grammatical structures, difficult vocabulary, etc. When teaching receptive skills, it is important to include materials that are interesting to the students and vary to maintain interest. There should also be a mixture of authentic (from the real world) and non-authentic (created for the classroom) materials. This will give the students real world confidence while also allowing them to see the grammatical structures they are learning in action.
