We use past tenses to describe situations in the past. Same as with present tenses we can distinguish completely finished actions and actions continuously going on and we can describe them in relation to whether they occurred at, before or after a specific moment or period of time in the past. Unfortunately for students, many of verbs used typical daily situations and conversations are irregular in the past tenses, so they have to be memorised. Also the use of auxiliary verbs and remembering to add the '-ing' ending to the base verbs in continuous tenses causes a lot of confusion. All of it together provides plenty of room for errors and mistakes.
