Chapter 18 discusses the modal verbs, phrasal verbs, and the passive voice. Most teachers would probably agree that modal verbs are one of the hardest things to teach. Modal verbs are used to show levels of certainty, politeness for requests, and obligation. For example, ?may? is more polite than ?can?. Phrasal verbs are divided into three categories: intransitive, transitive separable, and intransitive separable. These verbs are two or more words that combine to create a single meaning for the verb. The last topic in this chapter is the passive voice. The passive voice is used to take emphasis away from the agent of the action.
