The purpose of this unit was to discuss the usage, both pros and cons of using a course book as your dominant instructional guide. On the positive side course books can be excellent for providing a syllabus and direction, students often expect one and can use it as a reference when needed, and there is often good supplemental materials and teaching hints for novices. The negatives of using a course book are that they are made for a general audience and not tailored to your class, they can sometimes make teachers lazier and sap students and teacher creativity. They should be taken as an aid and a guide rather than the class itself. When using the text the teacher must decide how to use the materials and should, omit, supplement, or reorganize as needed for their own class. When not sing a course book, the teacher must be aware of the differences between authentic and inauthentic materials. Authentic materials are things designed for native speakers of the language , from books to menus. Inauthentic materials are those that are created and leveled to help speakers that are new to the language. Both have their purposes, the level of the materials and the level of the students must be considered when using authentic materials.
