Receptive skills include reading and listening. These skills aren?t just for the eyes and ears, but also involve using our minds to understand and process the information. We use the following specialist skills to aid in understanding when using receptive skills: predictive skills, specific information scanning, general idea skimming, detailed information, and deduction from context. There are some problems that may occur when teaching and learning receptive skills that has to do with the language in the text, topic, and the tasks. A few ways to approach these difficulties are by pre-teaching vocabulary, carefully selecting text and topics, creating interest through engaging activities, and using comprehension tasks. What I learned from this unit (as well as from the other units) is that a well organized lesson sets students up for success and mastery in the lesson. By carefully selecting appropriate topics and activities as well as anticipating any language issues and addressing them in advance, the students are more likely to follow the lesson with ease and perform better, all of which will boost their confidence. It's important to keep the students in mind: their language level, their interests, and their needs.
