There are several teaching methodologies that have been practised over time. Each methodology carries both benefits and consequences. No single methodology can be applied to a classroom because of the variations in ability, age, culture, behaviour and the teachers themselves. This course is based around the ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) method, which allows all aspects of a language to be exercised, and provides the most flexibility to a teacher. A large part of a class involves elicitation, involving the students as much as possible and finding responses throughout the class. There are three main types of ESA lessons - straight arrow, boomerang and patchwork. Each type is used according to the type of class, the topic and the ability of learners. Engaging the class is focused around getting students involved in the lesson, as a warm up. Engage activities include introductions, or I Spy. The Study part is a more controlled lesson that focuses on language structure and form. Study activities include wordsearches and gap fill. The activate section challenges students to use as much of the language as possible, to exercise their fluency rather than accuracy. Activate activities include role plays, debates and producing materials.
