This section covered common problem situations. Some of the problem situations are large classes, different levels of skill, having students who are reluctant to participate, first lessons, and the use of native language. The section also presented suggestions for dealing with the situation. For dealing with students wanting to use their native language, it would be good for the teacher to only respond to the students when they ask in English. For first lessons, in one case the students may all be new to the teacher and each other. In this case it would be beneficial for the teacher to use activities that will start a rapport among the students and between the class and the teacher. For the situation when a student is reluctant to participate it may be helpful to use pairwork. The reluctant student may feel more at ease working with another student. Having a class of students with different skill levels can be a problem. It is a good idea to have extra work or exercises one the same topic for the more advanced student to work on while the other students are finishing the base work or exercise. Some solutions to the problem of large classes is to have all-class choral drills, pairwork, and assigning leaders over smaller groups.
