The idea of course development has long interested me. As an online English trainer, I never had groups or actual set numbers of lessons. Rather, learners would receive x number of hours and be allowed to schedule them in increments of time with trainers. While some learners only had time for the minimum, 30 minutes, per lesson, some preferred 45- or 60-minute lessons. Near the expiration date of their credits, they would book a lot of longer lessons. This meant that there were no syllabi and it was up to a trainer's discretion on how to best utilize the time available. The official division of time in a half-hour lesson was more about establishing continuity to the previous lesson and the next lesson because there were no other learners in the class. We took two/three minutes for greetings, reminding the learner what was discussed last time, asking if they had any questions, acknowledging if they did their homework, etc. Similarly, testing happened at the outset and that was the only time any levels were recorded in the system.
