Unit 6 focused on the past tenses. The forms for the past tenses resemble that of the present tenses except for the fact that the verbs are now in the past tense. The past tenses compose of the past simple, the past continuous, the past perfect, and the past perfect continuous. You would use the past simple for actions completed at a definite time in the past when the time is given, when the time is asked about, when the action took place at a definite time without this time mentioned, and sometimes after inquiries using the present perfect. The past continuous tense is used for interrupted past actions, to indicate gradual development that took place in the past, to express an action which began that time and probably continues after, and in descriptions. The past continuous almost always require a time reference. The past perfect tense is used to represent actions that occurred before other actions in the past. Normally, words like \"when\" and \"after\" are used to indicate that a past action had completely finished before another action in the past started. Finally, the past perfect continuous talks about longer actions in the past that had been going on for some time up to the past moment that we are talking about.
