Perhaps second to a teacher's ability to purely teach English, is their ability to troubleshoot when problems arise within a class. A teacher may encounter a variety of dilemmas where the solution isn't immediately apparent from the lesson plan. Student's often have difficulty with specific items, so making note of such things for a little individual attention is worthwhile, but teachers may also face problems on a class-wide scale. Examples of this include hesitant students in a first lesson, and establishing rapport with the students setting the stage for a productive semester. Varying skill levels within classrooms can also cause trouble for a teacher, but strategies including pairwork, or supplementary materials for the more proficient students can help. Problems arising from large class size can be mitigated by making effective use of group work, choral exercises, and student leaders who assist in the overall learning process. One problematic area we've discussed numerous times, is the students' desire to use their native language. The best strategy for this, is to only respond to student's when they use English, but be sensitive to student's who simply cannot articulate the language they need, and assist them in doing so.
