When facing a new class for the first time, it is important to get to know your students for a variety of reasons; - what is their current level of English - what is their purpose for wanting to learn English (through a needs analysis or an informal chat) - what areas are they finding most difficult - perhaps their interests which could be later incorporated into a lesson - and to build a good rapport so that interaction readily happens. Warm up games are ice-breakers which can help lessen anxiety and promote a fun, safe environment for risk taking. This safe environment is important as students need to be encouraged to speak English only when in the classroom. Teachers replying only in English will help set that expectation. For those reluctant students, teachers can use pair work, use controlled practice, use role-play or a tape recorder where students tape what they want to say for the teacher to listen to. Where there is a large class, difficulty involving all students becomes apparent. To combat this teachers should use; - pair/group work - choral repetition - worksheets and be mindful that all students can hear the teacher. For those who are early finishers, keep a selection of activities (such as wordfinds) on hand.
