Unit 15 discusses the purpose of evaluating and testing students as part of an EFL course, as well as giving some basic information on prevalent external examinations for which students might be interested in preparing. The progress evaluation of students is not limited to formal testing, although language schools will often require a particular testing protocol and/or timeline. Alternate evaluative suggestions are periodic tutorials and student evaluations. Tutorials are an opportunity for review and discussion of previous work, such as its aims, successes, and difficulties. Student evaluations consist of students reporting their reactions and experiences of a course through a survey or guided discussion. The section of this unit devoted to external examinations was informative, as well. Many students at language schools are attempting to learn or improve English skills for a specific purpose. If a student intends to use English in his/her workplace or to study abroad, knowledge of the necessary examinations would be essential to success. An EFL teacher who hopes to aid his/her students in achieving such a goal would need to know about these exams and be able to guide that student to the appropriate resources for preparation.
