In either case, the teacher will not have to resort to the course book but rather use activities that will build a rapport between the teacher and the students and vice-visa, find out about the students,their needs,their English language level, etc. There is a necessity for warmers at the beginning if a lesson. They need to be short, fun, communicative and designed to get the students motivated for learning. In situations where the students are of different levels of understanding, the teacher can either use different materials for the same students or use same materials for different groups or pair the stronger students with the weaker ones or don't do anything. An experienced teacher will do a mix of the ideas for a smooth running class. The situation might not be the same with a larger class. With reluctant students, much pair work should be encouraged, the teacher should encourage the use of role-play, use controlled practice and even ask the student to record (with the aid of tape recorder) what they would like to listen outside the lesson. When faced with difficulty in listening skills the teacher should work with the students to improve their listening skills.
