In this unit I have learnt that it will be important for me to evaluate students' levels and progress so that, as a teacher, I am able to give feedback to students on these areas in English. It will also be helpful to prepare lessons and materials to cover areas where students need extra support and to provide activities suitable to help them progress further. I am now aware there are numerous ways to assess a student's language level including tutorials, tests and evaluation by the students. I have learnt that it will be helpful to use tutorials or the last ten minutes of the week's final lesson to discuss the work done, aims, tasks and whether there are any problems. I also realise it useful to ask students to evaluate their course and progress, either through questionnaires or discussion, as it allows students a much greater degree of self-awareness about their own learning. I have learnt that various tests can support teachers to help evaluate students' ability, levels and progress. These can include placement, progress, diagnostic and practice tests. I am also now aware that language schools may want me to enter students for more formal external exams including TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC and Cambridge Assessments, which are widely used.
