This unit covered teaching a range of adult learner types. Beginners can be divided into false beginners, absolute beginners and beginners without knowledge of the Roman alphabet. When teaching beginners it's important to control language used, have clearly defined aims, use careful board work and be visual. There may be a mix of beginners with different needs or skills levels in the one classroom, so the teacher should think about how to overcome these issues, such as pairing weak students with strong ones. Teaching individuals can remove many of these issues, but can create new problems such as teacher fatigue and loss of classroom dynamics. Teaching children requires slow and clear delivery, repetition and positive reactions to children's efforts at pronunciation. The use of drawing activities, games and reward stickers may be beneficial. There are many issues that may cause child behaviour problems in class, such as peer pressure, boredom and attention seeking. Finally, a teacher may be required to teach English to business people, and it's important to bear in mind that the teacher does not need to be an expert in this field to teach these students, and that they may be tired or affected by motivations such as a potential promotion.
