In this section, I learnt that the similar sentence structures denote the tense as being past simple, past continuous, past perfect and past perfect continues. These structures refer respectively to the aforementioned: ? Past simple to the addition of -ed to the base form of the verb ? with the addition of did not for negative and commencing a sentence with Did. ? Past continuous in the affirmative structure refers to the subject plus was / were and the verb receives and -ing ending. For the negative, the sentence structure remains the same as for the affirmative except for the addition of NOT to was or were. In a question, the sentence structure changes and the sentence commences with was or were, followed by the subject which is followed by the verb with -ing ending. ? Past perfect sentence structure includes the subject plus had and the past participle; for the negative an addition of not; and for a question the sentence commences with had. ? Past perfect continuous, the sentence structure includes had and been and the verb receives an -ing ending. Similarly, so for the negative except NOT is added to had not been. For a question the sentence commences with Had and include been and the verb retains the -ing ending.
