As a student, I often noticed the subtle tricks my teachers used to get our classroom going. Funnily enough, I didn't mind that feeling of seeing behind the curtain, and I enjoyed participating in class discussion when the opportunity arose and contribution felt like a valuable way to impress a teacher with my progress. In reading this unit, I feel the takeaway is that these subtle techniques really work. As long as a teacher can maintain control and awareness of his/her classroom, they can be used to jog classrooms into activity and cajole or encourage students in different ways. This unit named a bagful of techniques, some of which felt obvious, some less so, that I'm happy to take with me and use myself. As a teacher, I can already see that becoming comfortable, nay fluent, at varying between these different approaches will be a benchmark of success. Moreover, I don't mind if students see, like I did, the techniques that I'm using - I think predictability of format in the classroom offers familiar ground for students, especially when the task of learning so often pits them into intellectual discomfort. All in all, I feel this unit emphasized the importance of a teacher's technique, and that my own personal experience validate that lesson.
