This unit addresses some common problems in the classroom, including beginning the course and each class, teaching classes with varying levels, teaching large classes, frequent use of native tongue, andstudents who are reluctant to participate. At the beginning of the course, it is important to focus on establishing rapport with the students and building a safe, comfortable classroom community. Planning activities and games to get to know each other is a good idea. At the beginning of each class, it is helpful to have a short, fun, warm-up activity to get the students comfortable and engaged. Some strategies for a multi-level class are to pair stronger students with weaker ones, plan different activities using the same material, and to group the students. With large classes, the teacher may need to use more worksheets and choral repetition, and do group work. Encourage students to use English as much as possible, be clear, and teach at the right level for the students to help them not use their native language as often in class. It's important to help reluctant students feel comfortable in class, which can include making sure to have the students do controlled practice and get comfortable with the language before asking them to use it publicly.
